I like cooking and I have a heap of blackberries so I'll aim to make a variation of that that tart. And now I need to go plant some eggplants ! The dip I make is basically just eggplant cooked in vinegar and then mushed up with a heap of herbs- no-one else in my family will touch it though my wife likes the roasted eggplant, red onion and coriander salad :)

You could totally sub your blackberries for the blueberries and raspberries. Do you grow them yourself?

Your eggplant dip and salad both sound AMAZING! Definitely worth planting eggplant :).

I have been telling people for years that fruit and veggies (especially raw including lots of greens) makes you happy. I have berries every morning in my fruit salad. Thanks for your wonderful articles all year, looking forward to learning more in 2024.

I notice a substantial difference in my mood if I don't get my customary 10+ serves of fruit and veg per day!

What can I do with Black Currants - my bushes are producing overtime! I love tart, but the base....gluten free please.

By all means, swap your black currants for the berries. You could use rolled rice or quinoa to replace the oats in the base.

Oh good! I will try that for Christmas - do not want to waste them.

Nowadays we (my husband, dog and myself), spend Christmas day by ourselves. Family life became too complicated and stressful so we pulled the plug. We enjoy a peaceful and relaxing day at the beach or in the mountains with a picnic consisting of a homemade veggie/salad platter. We see lots of people spending Christmas day picnicking or BBQ-ing out in nature. This time of year can be very physically, emotionally and mentally demanding and the tyranny also seems to ramp up. Weather heats up, too much rich food, alcohol, stress, lack of sleep and increased inflammation take a heavy toll. Our bodies can only take so much. We are very health conscious through choice and necessity. We enjoy home prepared food and prefer to avoid "food hangovers."

Last year, we took our Christmas lunch to the beach. It was delightful - although we had to find a sheltered spot to avoid getting sand blown into the mushroom loaf :). This year will have to be somewhat more conventional as my Mum is staying with us, and her mobility is very limited.

I know what you mean by the 'food hangovers'. We rarely eat out now, but whenever we do, I wake up the following morning feeling less than stellar. I'd rather eat my own home-cooked food and feel good, physically and mentally, than eat a 'treat' that makes me feel crappy.
